Takeaways: Texas Dominates No. 6 Oklahoma 23-6 Behind Stifling Defense
It took seven weeks, but it appears the Longhorns may have finally figured it out.
It took seven weeks, but it appears the Texas Longhorns may have figured things out.
Using their suffocating defense, the Longhorns dismantled the Oklahoma offense, en route to a 23-6 victory over the sixth-ranked Sooners.
Why it matters: A week after they were dominated by Florida and fell out of the Top 25, a dominant win over a Top 10 team like Oklahoma should put them back in the rankings with plenty of football to play.
Texas’ defense has not allowed a touchdown in three of its last four meetings with Oklahoma, including the past two years.
“There was a lot of shit getting talked about our team, and I think they responded,” Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian said.
Here are three takeaways from Texas’ win over No. 6 Oklahoma:
Arch Manning finally arrives
One of the biggest questions coming into Saturday’s game was how Arch Manning would do in his first Red River Rivalry game against one of the top defenses in the country.
The answer? Just fine.
Manning completed 21 of his 27 passes for 166 yards, a touchdown, and, most importantly, no interceptions. He used his legs and scrambled for 34 yards, including a huge 29-yard run that sealed the win.
“Arch (Manning) took a lot of hits last week. The biggest thing that impressed me this week about this game was he didn’t miss one rep of practice this week,” Sarkisian said.
“That’s the toughness that he had to have,” he added.
